Honorable Eric Perrodin, Compton City Attorney and former Mayor, has joined the Citizens Coalition for Change in opposing Measure CA. Both the City Attorney and the Coalition believe that keeping this position elected ensures greater transparency and independence from City Council influence.
One of our major concerns is that if Measure CA passes and the City Attorney becomes an appointed position by the City Council, it could potentially open the door for nepotism and corruption like it was the case back in 2000s. This is because the decision to appoint would be in the hands of a few council members, rather than being decided by the broader voting public.
If the City Attorney were to be appointed, there is a risk that the selection process could be influenced by political favors or personal connections, leading to less accountability and impartiality compared to an elected City Attorney who is directly answerable to the voters.
