On April 16, 2025, the Compton City Council voted to suspend the issuance of permits for the sale of fireworks within city limits, effectively banning fireworks sales for the upcoming Fourth of July celebrations.

The decision was made under the authority granted by the municipal code, allowing the council to regulate such activities. The vote passed with near unanimity; Councilmember Andre Spicer abstained, while all other council members voted in favor of the suspension.

This move follows a history of debates over fireworks in Compton.

  • Compton Council Considers Ban on Fireworks Sale/Use

  • In 2009, a proposed citywide ban on fireworks sales was rejected by voters. The associated Measure F was defeated by voters, with 56.4% voting against it and 43.6% in favor.

  • It has been reported by several media outlets online, that in 2017 a charter amendment aiming to ban all firework sales was turned down by the electorate. However, we want to state that no records were found on a 2017 charter amendment in Compton specifically proposing the ban on firework sales.

The suspension has elicited varied reactions from the community. Some residents and organizations have expressed support, citing concerns over fire hazards, noise pollution, air quality, and the well-being of pets and individuals sensitive to loud noises. Others, particularly nonprofit groups that rely on fireworks sales for fundraising, have voiced concerns about the financial impact of the ban.

Local media outlets have reported on the council's decision:

As an organization, the Citizens' Coalition maintains a neutral stance on this decision. However, we acknowledge the city leadership's action, recognizing the potential benefits in terms of public safety, environmental health, and community well-being.

Concluding statement by Citizens' Coalition:

As an organization, we genuinely hope that this decision will lead to a safer, more peaceful, and serene celebration of our beloved country’s founding. We believe in honoring the Fourth of July with respect for our neighbors, our environment, and the well-being of our community. We are all truly and deeply proud to be part of this great nation—and we support efforts that reflect that pride through responsibility and care.

Inglewood Bans Fireworks

In February 2025, the Inglewood City Council unanimously passed Ordinance 25-05, banning the sale, use, and display of all fireworks—including “safe and sane” types. The decision was driven by safety, health, and quality-of-life concerns. The ban applies citywide, with exceptions for city-approved events. (More info)
