Writer: Citizens Coalition AdminCitizens Coalition Admin

As of February 12, 2025, the City of Compton has not announced any topics on the upcoming Community Budget Meetings.

The most recent meeting occurred on April 20, 2023. It is about time to look into our budget.

These meetings are a vital opportunity for us residents to engage in local governance and influence how our city allocates its resources.

We encourage all Compton residents to take charge of our city's future. The Citizen's Coalition invites you to attend Compton's Community Budget Meetings to have your voice heard, stay informed, and help shape the priorities that matter to all of us collectively!

What should be typically covered in the Community Budget Meetings?

Community Budget Meetings should typically cover at the minimum these key topics:

  • Revenue and Expenditures – A breakdown of the city's income sources (taxes, grants, fees) and how funds are allocated across departments.

  • Public Safety Funding – Budget allocations for police, fire, and emergency services.

  • Infrastructure & Public Works – Updates on road repairs, water systems, parks, and public transportation projects.

  • Education & Community Programs – Funding for schools, libraries, after-school programs, and community services.

  • Economic Development – Plans for business growth, job creation, and housing initiatives.

  • Public Input & Priorities – Resident feedback sessions where the community can voice concerns, ask questions, and suggest changes.

  • Debt & Reserves – Discussion of financial obligations, reserves, and long-term fiscal health.

In addition to standard budget topics as listed above, Compton’s Community Budget Meetings should also address critical local issues that impact safety, economic development, and overall community well-being.

Some key Compton-specific topics that should be covered include:

1. Crime Prevention & Public Safety

  • Increased funding for anti-gang initiatives and partnerships with local organizations to prevent youth involvement in crime.

  • Expansion of community policing efforts to build trust between law enforcement and residents.

  • Strategies to reduce violent crime, particularly homicides and armed robberies.

  • Implementation of surveillance technology, like license plate readers and additional street cameras in high-crime areas.

2. Gang & Drug Prevention Programs

  • Increased funding for youth intervention programs to steer at-risk youth away from gang life.

  • Rehabilitation & reintegration programs for former gang members seeking a new path.

  • Anti-drug initiatives to combat the spread of fentanyl, meth, and other substances in the community.

  • Partnerships with schools to educate students about drug abuse prevention and the dangers of gang affiliation.

3. Housing & Homelessness Solutions

  • Affordable housing projects to provide alternatives for families struggling with rising costs.

  • Funding for mental health and addiction services to help address homelessness caused by substance abuse.

  • Emergency shelter funding and resources for the unhoused population.

4. Economic Revitalization & Job Creation

  • Support for small businesses and incentives to encourage economic growth in Compton.

  • Workforce development programs to train residents in high-demand trades and careers.

  • Crime reduction strategies to attract new businesses and investors without fear of gang-related issues.

5. Street Takeovers & Illegal Activities

  • Stronger policies and enforcement against illegal street racing and takeovers, which endanger residents.

  • Collaboration with the county for stricter penalties and community awareness initiatives.

6. Education & Youth Engagement

  • Scholarship and internship programs to provide alternative paths to success for young people.

  • Funding for after-school programs and extracurricular activities to keep kids engaged.

7. Transparency & Accountability in Law Enforcement

  • Publicly accessible data on police activity, including crime statistics, arrest records, and use-of-force incidents.

  • Budget transparency for law enforcement spending, ensuring funds are used effectively for community safety.

By incorporating these Compton-specific concerns into budget discussions, we residents can ensure that funds are allocated toward real solutions for the challenges facing our community.

Street Prostitution & Human/Child Trafficking in Compton: Key Topics for Community Budget Meetings

These are serious and urgent issues that should be addressed in Compton's Community Budget Meetings to ensure the safety of vulnerable individuals and the well-being of the entire community. Here’s how they should be incorporated into the discussions:

1. Increased Law Enforcement & Task Forces

  • Allocate funding for dedicated anti-trafficking task forces within the Compton Sheriff's Department.

  • Implement stings and undercover operations targeting traffickers and those soliciting prostitution.

  • Strengthen collaboration with federal agencies (FBI, ICE, DOJ) and local law enforcement to disrupt trafficking networks.

2. Crackdown on Street Prostitution

  • Increase funding for street patrols and surveillance cameras in high-prostitution areas.

  • Push for stronger penalties on pimps and sex buyers, not just the victims.

  • Advocate for legislation that allows law enforcement to seize assets from traffickers and reinvest funds into victim recovery programs.

3. Protection & Recovery for Victims

  • Allocate budget for safe houses and emergency shelters specifically for victims of human trafficking.

  • Fund trauma-informed mental health services for rescued individuals.

  • Establish long-term rehabilitation programs, including job training, education, and life skills.

4. Public Awareness & Community Involvement

  • Fund billboards and public service campaigns to educate the community on warning signs and how to report trafficking.

  • Provide resources in schools, churches, and community centers to prevent at-risk youth from being lured into trafficking.

  • Offer training for hotel workers, rideshare drivers, and frontline workers to recognize and report trafficking cases.

5. Strengthen Legislation & Legal Support

  • Fund legal aid services for victims to help them escape their traffickers and expunge criminal records related to their exploitation.

  • Work with state lawmakers to introduce stronger anti-trafficking laws and increase penalties for traffickers.

6. School & Youth Protection Programs

  • Implement school-based awareness programs to educate students about the dangers of trafficking and online exploitation.

  • Increase funding for mentorship and intervention programs to help at-risk youth avoid recruitment by traffickers.

7. Community Reporting & Anonymous Tip Lines

  • Fund and promote anonymous reporting hotlines and texting services to help community members report suspicious activity.

  • Support neighborhood watch programs focused on identifying and reporting trafficking operations.

By allocating funds toward these initiatives, Compton can take a proactive stance against sex trafficking and prostitution, making the community safer for everyone, especially vulnerable women and children.
