Although commonly believed, the city of Los Angeles does not currently have a formal "sanctuary city" law on the books that officially designates it as a true sanctuary city. The City Council voted in June 2023 to support the idea of a sanctuary ordinance but has only begun taking concrete steps toward this after the November 6 election results.
With incoming U.S. President Donald Trump planning “mass deportations” starting January 2025, the LA City Council is now accelerating efforts to adopt a sanctuary city ordinance. On November 19, the Council voted unanimously (13-0) to back legal language aimed at preventing city employees from collecting or sharing information about individuals’ immigration status. The ordinance would also prohibit city employees from participating in federal immigration law enforcement activities, such as detaining or arresting individuals on immigration-related grounds. Additionally, it would bar city properties, including jails, from being used to assist with immigration enforcement efforts.
