Senator Laura Richardson, representing California’s 35th Senate District, announced that she tied for the most bills signed into law this legislative session. Drawing on her extensive public service experience at the city, state, and federal levels, Senator Richardson claims that she focused on both statewide policy and urgent district needs—particularly homelessness, public safety (?), access to healthcare, and community revitalization. Or did she?

Enough Symbolism. It’s Time for Real Representation.

Senator Laura Richardson’s update reads more like a résumé polishing than a results report. She boasts of tying for the most bills signed—a statistic that means nothing to the people she represents. She highlights her city, state, and federal experience and titles like Assistant Majority Whip and Chair of a Senate Subcommittee, but none of that speaks to the everyday realities of her district. Her emphasis on partnerships with high-profile officials and statewide bills about gas prices and wildfires may look impressive on paper, yet they do little for Compton’s and district's immediate struggles.

While Sacramento applauds, Compton and other underserved communities still wait. Cleaning cemeteries while neighborhoods crumble, redirecting homeless funds without creating meaningful solutions to the homelessness in Compton and across the district, and passing symbolic “equity” bills that change nothing on the ground are not victories. We deserve more than political polish — we deserve real representation that delivers for Compton.
