With just a few days left to vote, we urge a NO vote on MEASURE CA for reasons outlined on our website:
An appointed City Attorney fosters an environment where corruption and incompetence can more easily thrive. Though opinions differ, we feel it’s our duty to support a NO vote on MEASURE CA. Ultimately, the decision belongs to the people!
Addressing corruption and incompetence in city governance is not within the city attorney’s direct responsibilities. Their duties are to provide legal counsel, represent the city in legal matters, and ensure city actions are lawful. Voters must hold city administrators (e.g., elected council members, City Clerk, City Attorney) accountable by voting out those who fail in their duties, as seen in the protracted effort to remove Galvan. Historically, Compton has elected its city attorney to ensure accountability and maintain transparency. This practice allows residents to directly select their city’s legal representative, reinforcing trust in local governance.
In recent years, there have been exceptions to this practice. Damon M. Brown was appointed in 2019, followed by Eric J. Perrodin in 2021. However, "The exception proves the rule," underscoring the rule’s validity through these exceptions.
